Jitterbug

Changing the social landscape of a small college town

The Jitterbug was a group project to revitalize the downtown area of Cedarville Ohio. We looked at what was currently there and discovered that there was a strange space where two buildings were joined haphazardly. The Hometown Diner and the Cedarville Senior Center. So we wanted to convert this space and optimize its functionality as a place where not just seniors could meet, but everyone bringing the generations together. Cedarville is a place where about half of the town's population are college students, and there are a sizable amount of the residents who are elderly. Now those two groups of people barely interact, but we wanted to create a space to change that. We combined the two existing spaces into one footprint and divided functionality into a diner space, foyer/gathering space, and an events/dance space.

Location in context
We wanted to establish what the aesthetic and exact use of space would be, so we created the above picture and the mood board below. And we wanted to explore what the flow of space would be.

We then looked to make our vision more tangable by creating a floorplan and studying the flow of space to lay it out.

From here we split up the space and worked on modeling and rendering the spaces we had been assigned. I had the foyer area and rendered it out in Keyshot 10.
